IAI 02-19 Master- or Bachelor Thesis: FPGA based precision clock hold over designs and GPS disciplined clock for power grid measurement systems

Job description

The Institute of Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI) develops new methods and tools for the characterization of power gird behavior, modelling and simulation.

We have developed a recording system that uses the GPS-PPS (Pulse per second) signal to synchronize distributed measurements to the micro second level. With this tight synchronization we can overlay samples from different locations directly, so that the system acts a distributed oscilloscope – with all the fascinating signal evaluation possibilities.

For the next generation we are moving towards our own FPGA-based design to increase sampling rate and preprocessing capabilities. Therefore, we need to investigate methods to realize a precise GPS-based time stamping for an acquisition system based on a Xilinx Zynq XC7 SystemOnChip. Special attention is needed for situations where GPS reception is lost and the local clock needs to hold-over the timing information (and for the resynchronization).

The students’ tasks are to familiarize her/himself with the basics of FPGA technology, study the existing solution for GPS-PPS-synchronization acquisition systems, develop synchronization concept(s) for an FPGA based acquisition system, implement the most suitable solution on an available test platform, and demonstrate the principle of operation.

The scope of the work can be slightly adjusted to fit the personal qualification and the desired academic degree.

Personal qualification

We are looking for a self-motivated student in the field of electrical engineering, computer science or related. Knowledge and prior exposition to FPGAs is not a necessity but preferred. The applicant needs to have hands-on experience either in electronics or programming and strong ‘problem solving’ skills.
