PhD position in Reactive Transport Modelling (f/m/d)
This PhD study deals with reactive transport processes expected to occur in the so-called “near field” of a deep geological disposal system for nuclear waste.
The main goal of this doctoral research project is to investigate relevant thermo-hydro-geochemical processes at argillaceous/cementitious interfaces of a generic underground repository located in a claystone host rock by means of reactive transport modelling. Since these interfaces are characterized by steep chemical gradients, reactions will occur under non-equilibrium conditions, which may lead to secondary mineral phase formation and pore structure changes. Tasks of the PhD study include numerical simulations of mineral reactions at these clay/cement interfaces and how these processes impact geochemical reactions and transport of radionuclides. Focused experiments in order to validate and support model assumptions will be carried out.
The candidate (f/m/d) will have the opportunity to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of scientists from various centres of the Helmholtz Association of German Research (HGF) in order to significantly broaden her/his area of expertise. The study is part of the research project iCross (Integrity of nuclear waste repository systems – Cross-scale system understanding and analysis) which is funded by BMBF and HGF.
The candidate (f/m/d) will be expected to communicate her or his research in the form of peer-reviewed scientific journal publications and presentation at scientific conferences and project workshops.
The candidate (f/m/d) should hold a graduate degree (M.Sc.) in applied geosciences, chemical engineering, chemistry, engineering geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology or related disciplines.
The successful applicant (f/m/d) must have knowledge in groundwater flow, heat and solute transport. Experience in applying numerical models of groundwater flow and transport is required (e.g. with CODE_BRIGHT, COMSOL, MODFLOW or similar code). As well as experience in geochemical modelling is necessary (with PRHEEQC or a similar code). Knowledge in PHYTON or MATLAB is advantageous.
The candidate (f/m/d) should have high motivation for creative research, the willingness to work in a team, and the ability for independent thinking and self-learning. Fluent English language is expected.
