Job description

The holder of the post will represent the area of thermal turbomachinery in research, academic education, and innovation. The professorship is associated with the positions of Head of the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery (ITS) and of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center (UTC) of KIT. Current research focuses on single- and two-phase flows in the hot end, in the secondary air and oil system of aircraft engines, and in stationary gas turbines.

The future holder of the professorship is expected to strategically advance the existing research portfolio in the context of the energy transition. Thermal turbomachines and their integration in the overall system are in the focus of research and are studied using both experimental and numerical methods.

The holder of the post is expected to be in charge of undergraduate and advanced courses offered by ITS and to design them in a future-oriented way. This particularly includes the contribution to the lecture “Maschinen und Prozesse der Energiewandlung” (energy conversion machines and processes) in German and English for the Bachelor’s Programs of Maschinenbau and Mechanical Engineering International. Moreover, the Professor is expected to offer research-oriented specialized courses in the Master’s Program of Maschinenbau (mechanical engineering). In academic education, the future Professor will also represent the area of hydraulic machinery. The future Professor will execute university tasks with a teaching obligation of 9 hours per week per semester.

Personal qualification

We are looking for a person who is presently working in industry or science and has an outstanding scientific reputation in major areas of thermal turbomachinery and components for system integration. Knowledge of requirements to be met by turbomachines when integrated in a superordinate system is indispensable. Experience from working in industry is desired. Excellent teaching skills, leadership experience, and ability to work in a team are required. Engagement and experience in the acquisition of third-party funding for both basic and applied research are desired. The future Professor is expected to be ready to collaborate across disciplines and to actively participate in academic self-administration.

Employment is subject to Art. 14, par. 2 of the KIT Act in conjunction with Art. 47 LHG Baden-Württemberg (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges).
