IMT 43-2022 Master Thesis or Internship: Miniaturised magnetising coils for E-Beam

An electron-beam microscopy system encodes the sample properties, being exposed to the beam, in the path and phase of the electrons. An external magnetic field enables us to manipulate the electron path and scan the surface of the sample. Magnetizing coils can be utilized for this purpose. Limited space inside the device restricts the size of the coils. Besides, the coil shall be capable of providing the required magnetic field while the power dissipation is kept minimum in order to avoid any thermal load to the system and distort the temperature inside the chamber.
Miniaturized magnetizing coils are a good candidate for this purpose since their size can be adjusted according to the space requirements. Furthermore, they produce a relatively high magnetic field for a unit applied power. These coils also can focus the field at a small spot and avoid stray fields.
This project is a collaboration between Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT-KIT) and the center for microscopy and spectroscopy with electrons of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The main objective of this project is to tailor miniaturized coils for E-Beam systems.
As a part of this collaboration, we are employing enthusiastic students who would like to work on the challenging and novel topic to design, simulate, and fabricate a microchip with the required characteristics.
You will be integrated in the larger team of the Spin & Photon Applications (SPA-) Laboratory. Within this project, you will use the infrastructure existent at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), i.e., microfabrication facilities and micro-characterization equipment. This is a complete project, offering the possibility to fabricate and test the devices, giving you the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.
- field of study: Mechanical and/or electrical engineering, MEMS
- good academic record (marks); curious about various aspects of science;
- enthusiastic to work in a multidisciplinary environment;
- independent thinker and team player;
- in particular: strong interest in mechanical engineering and microsystems technologies;
- knowledge in microsystems/microfabrication is desirable.
