IMT 40-2022 Master Thesis: Building stereolithographic 3D printer for in situ studies

Institut für Mikrostrukturtechnik (IMT)

3D printing refers to the fabrication of 3D complex architectures through layer-by-layer bottom up approach. 3D printing is already making a significant impact in several research and industrial sector, including medical technologies, automotive sector, energy storage devices, to name a few. Among different 3D printing technologies, stereolithographic (SLA) printing is of our interest here, where a photoactive resin is cured layer-by-layer through a UV laser beam. We seek to understand the SLA printing mechanism better, and for that we plan to build our own SLA 3D printer. The master thesis will focus on building the 3D printer.

The specific tasks within the project will be:

  • building a SLA printer;
  • studying the 3D printing process for the custom-built printer;
  • characterization of the printing quality.

The candidate will be using the facilities existent the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT). Furthermore, the candidate will be given the opportunity to co-author in a conference/journal paper.
