IPE 06-21 Master Thesis: 3D Ultrasound Computer Tomography using the paraxial approximation

Job description

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women worldwide. X-ray mammography is the current standard method for its diagnosis. However, it uses ionizing radiation and suffers from low contrast between glandular and cancerous tissue. 3D Ultrasound Computed Tomography (3D USCT) is a novel imaging method for early breast cancer diagnosis, which currently proceeds towards clinical application. Contrary to X-ray mammography, 3D USCT in transmission mode allows the reconstruction of quantitative tissue parameters like the speed of sound and attenuation.

Since reconstruction of a full wave solution is computationally expensive and current ray-based reconstruction methods are limited in resolution, we use the paraxial approximation of the Helmholtz equation as a forward model.

The aim of the project is to extend the 2D forward simulation based on the paraxial approximation to the 3D case considering the geometry of the USCT III device, validate it with Green’s function simulation, extend the back-projection method to 3D, and find out the best parameters for the reconstruction of the back-projected field.

Task description:

  • Implementation of the new geometry read-out function, which considers the maximum allowed angle of propagation by the paraxial approximation
  • Implementation of the paraxial forward model in 3D based on the 2D simulations and considering the geometry of USCT III device
  • Validation of the paraxial simulated field with the Green’s function simulation
  • Analysis of the obtained simulations
  • Extension of the back-projection method for 3D
  • Optimization of the reconstruction

Programming and software development skills in MATLAB

Basic knowledge in signal processing

Basic knowledge in modeling of pressure fields

General interest and basic knowledge in medical image processing
