IMT 26-2022 Master Thesis: Development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system for mini- & microflow measurement

In the context of the micro Nuclear Magnetic Resonance team of the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), you will develop a system to measure novel flow regimes with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. To this end, you will design, manufacture and test a modular probe head, compatible with one of the most powerful magnets in Germany. This system should allow for the measurement of a wide range of different microflow patterns, often inaccessible by other flow measurement techniques. To do this, you will profit from the variety of manufacturing techniques available in situ, including but not limited to additive manufacturing, machining and laser cutting. Given the high degree of interdisciplinarity of this thesis, candidates lacking in one of the areas, but with a good background on the others, will be tutored and instructed in the others. It is also possible to join the team at IMT before the master thesis as a student scientific aid (HiWi) in order to gain familiarity with the MRI hardware, software and manufacturing techniques available in situ. This master thesis is conceived in a dynamic and technological context. You will be in regular contact to experts on each and all of the relevant fields. You will be exposed to a great number of state-of the art technologies and projects, giving you the opportunity to explore and learn about related projects and developments.

The project will take place in the labs and workshops of the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), located in the North Campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), so you are required to be legally eligible for performing your master thesis in Germany. The start and end dates are flexible, and can thus be adapted to the candidate and candidate’s institution requisites. Provided a proficient enough work, this thesis can result on a published paper.



Persönliche Qualifikation

  • Field of study: Physics/ Engineering
  • Knowledge and/or experience on: Mechanical design, Micro Manufacturing, Magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Notions of: Micro technology, Sensors and actuators, Signal/ image processing, Experimental laboratory work, Fluidics microfluidics, Programming (Matlab, Python or similar)
