IMT 28-20 Internship/ Bachelor- or Master Thesis: Characterisation of permanent magnets and their assembly for Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)

Organizational unit

Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT)

Job description

The magnetic field is an important aspect of electron spin resonance (ESR). Its strength and mostly homogeneity are important aspects in determining the quality of ESR signal. Conventionally, ESR systems use a large, immobile electromagnet to generate the required magnetic field. The proposed project focuses on making a compact and portable ESR magnet by using permanent rare-earth magnets (Neodymium magnets) arranged in a Halbach configuration. To generate an ESR-quality magnetic field, the magnetic (B) field vector of the individual trapezoidal magnet units must be mapped as the first step towards optimising the Halbach magnet.

Determination of B field vector is important because manufacturing uncertainties result in errors in reported B field vector, where some level of random magnetisation cannot be avoided due to the nature of process. An additional challenge arises when using non-standard (i.e. trapezoidal instead of cubic) permanent magnet geometries. An accurate B field vector map is essential in determining the best possible position for each unit magnet in the Halbach stack.

The project would require you to perform simulations and scripting to achieve your task. You would have access to various working laboratories at IMT, to construct the tools required to achieve the project goal.
