IMT 29-20 Master Thesis: 2-DoF Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) by Shape Memory Alloy Actuators

Job description

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) systems are now widely used for various miniature and handheld devices like in miniature robots, quadcopters and smartphones to stabilize the optical systems against external disturbances. Currently, most of these applications rely on voice coil motor (VCM) based Image Stabilization. However, the electromagnetic operating principle of VCM restricts the scaling down of OIS systems due to the presence of coils and magnets. An alternative concept is essential for further miniaturization of OIS systems. The focus of this Master Thesis is to develop a 2-DoF OIS system using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators.

SMA actuators make use of temperature-induced martensitic transformation allowing for high actuation force and stroke length. SMAs can be micromachined by optical lithography to scale down actuator size for rapid actuation. OIS systems in handheld devices, for instance, require an operating frequency of at least 10 Hz. A suitable actuator design along with optimal control strategy are essential for this application. Gyro sensors will be used to estimate external disturbances.


  • Design and fabrication of SMA actuators and evaluation of its thermal and mechanical performance
  • Design and manufacturing of OIS system with Gyro sensing and control circuitry
  • Development of control strategy
  • Development of test setup and performance evaluation of OIS system

Personal qualification

We are looking for ambitious, creative and self-motivated people who enjoy working in a multidisciplinary and international team.

Experience on Labview or Matlab is essential.

Knowledge on Comsol or similar simulation software is preferred.

Field of study: Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, physics or similar disciplines with good understanding about electrical circuitry and control strategies.
