IMT 16-20 Internship/ Bachelor- or Master Thesis: Development and characterization of planar resonators operating at 7 GHz on a photosensitive glass

Job description

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance is a spectroscopic technique which uses microwaves to excite transitions between different electron spin states of unpaired electrons, and detects the resulting oscillating magnetic field. Excitation requires the conversion of a microwave signal into an oscillating magnetic field. The efficiency of the process is enhanced by using a suitable resonant structure.

The aim of this project is the development of efficient resonators for small samples. To achieve this, planar resonators developed via microfabrication techniques are to be implemented. The substrate used in our approach is a photosensitive glass, which enables making through-holes (vias), bench structures, and channels inside the substrate.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in development and experimental works. This project includes three main parts:

(1) Characterization of the photosensitive glass behavior in terms of the light exposure dosage for desired structures

(2) Micro-fabrication of the different resonators that have already been designed and simulated

(3) The electrical characterization of the fabricated resonators

The facilities of the Institute of Microstructure Technology, as well as our collaboration with other institutes will provide a perfect environment for doing an interesting research and gaining precious experiences.

Personal qualification

  • Cleanroom experience
  • Being familiar with COMSOL and/ or ADS software
  • Enthusiast to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Highly motivated, independent thinker
  • Good proficiency in English (both speaking and writing
