W3-Professorship for Ceramic Composites Technology

In a joint procedure and as of the next possible date, KIT and DLR invite applications for employment as W3 Professor for Ceramic Composites Technology in Division III, KIT Department of Mechanical Engineering. The professorship will be affiliated to the Institute for Applied Materials (IAM).
Candidates should have an outstanding scientific qualification in the area of composites, in particular ceramic composites, with acknowledged expertise in technology, structures, and design. Moreover, in-depth experience in the area of machine learning/materials informatics is required and the candidate should be able to adequately impart the corresponding contents to students at KIT. Academic education work will include lectures and exercises in both German and English in the amount of two hours per week per semester.
At DLR’s Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart, the candidate will head the Ceramic Composites and Structures Unit with more than 20 employees. Work focuses on the production and development of ceramic composites, their characterization, design of components, and analysis of material and component behavior by means of numerical simulation and non-destructive testing. Use of the corresponding modeling and digitalization tools shall be further increased. Scientific and economic development of the Unit is based on research financed from basic funds and projects funded by third parties, mainly by industry.
The candidate selected will be appointed professor at KIT according to the Jülich model and will head the Ceramic Composites and Structures Unit of DLR’s Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart. KIT and DLR plan to continue their close cooperation in the area of ceramic composites in research and academic education and extend it by the joint use of resources.

Disciplinary and scientific leadership experience will be indispensable. Social competence and integration capacity will be required together with the willingness and entrepreneurial capability to shape and specifically develop the Unit. The future holder of the position should be experienced in acquiring and executing collaboration projects and have a network of national and international partners from science and industry. For academic education at KIT, excellent didactic skills and pedagogic qualification will be required.
Candidates should have a habilitation degree or an equivalent qualification that may also have been acquired outside of the university. Employment conditions as outlined in § 47 LHG (Law of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges) in conjunction with § 20 KITG (KIT-Gesetz) shall apply.
