IMT 15-2023 Master Thesis: Electropolishing of a Nickel–Titanium Shape Memory Alloy

Organisationseinheit

Institut für Mikrostrukturtechnik (IMT)

Ihre Aufgaben

Nickel titanium alloys are widely used in different fields, such as biomedicine, machinery and electronics, and aerospace, because of their shape memory effect, superelasticity, and corrosion resistance. Surface treatment on nickel titanium alloy is necessary to reduce metal ion released in human tissues and prevent human poisoning and organ failure.

For the biomedical application of NiTi alloys, an excellent surface finishing process is required to guarantee high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, eliminating the allergenic and toxic effects associated with the release of nickel ions in the body. Electropolishing is a process that can reduce surface imperfections and form a thin protective layer, even in complex-shaped devices. This master thesis will explore an electropolishing method for optimizing the surface quality of NiTi films. A hybrid electropolishing solution suitable for NiTi films will be determined through experiments. The key factors affecting the electropolishing process such as voltage, temperature and time, will be analyzed. The best polishing parameters are obtained through orthogonal experiment and single factor experiment.

This master thesis project provides an exciting opportunity to work on a hot topic within smart materials. The project offers the chance to contribute to the development of new research findings and may result in the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.
