IMT 12-2023 Bachelor- / Master Thesis: Manipulation of micro-particles using ADEPT, a custom built dielectrophoresis platform

Ihre Aufgaben

ADEPT (Adaptable Dielectrophoresis Embedded Platform Tool) is a custom-made electronic toolbox for manipulating micron-sized cells/particles using dielectrophoretic force. This toolbox can be used for various applications such as single-cell manipulation, patterning of cells and electrorotation of microparticles. The figure shows the manipulation of Cyanobacteria (3 µm in diameter) within a 100 µm diameter region formed by six microelectrodes. This project aims to use the tool kit to investigate cell-cell interactions and record the response of the bacterium to a light stimulus. Such a µm precision in positioning the bacterium helps unravel the behaviour patterns observed in response to an external stimulus. These findings would help biologists understand the molecular pathways by fluorescently tagging the bacterium. The specific tasks within the project will be:

  • Cell handling;
  • Microfabrication;
  • Fiber optics integration into the chip;
  • Experiments with ADEPT systems using cell samples.

You will be integrated in a larger team within the SPA-Lab. This is a complete project, offering the possibility to handle embedded system and optics and test the measurement setup, giving you the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.
