Job description

In the Cluster of Excellence POLiS (DFG EXC_2154) we are developing batteries of the future that are more powerful, more reliable, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly than current lithium-ion batteries. These so-called post-lithium batteries based on alternative charge carriers such as sodium, magnesium, calcium, aluminium and chloride ions offer a more cost-effective, long-term option for mass applications of electrochemical energy storage. The overarching goal of our cluster is to build up a fundamental understanding of a new generation of electrochemical energy storage systems and to develop a platform for future stationary and mobile applications.

With this concept, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Ulm University, the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the University of Giessen have asserted themselves in the Excellence Strategy of the Federal Government and the Länder - as the only German Cluster of Excellence for battery research. POLiS is funded with 47 million euros over seven years.

The main task is to develop Na-ion-pouch full cells based on active materials synthesized within POLiS. For this purpose, small laboratory pouch cells shall first be tested to find optimal conditions. The work shall finally result in the production of large-scale ~10Ah pouch cells. For this development, a doctoral position is available at the Institute for Applied Materials - Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS). The work includes all aspects of cell manufacturing, testing and analysis of the results. Particularly the formation process and ageing in the full cell shall be investigated in more detail, e.g. through analysis of gaseous and liquid components of the electrolyte, as well as material characterization.

We offer you the opportunity to complete the promotion within three years as a member of the graduate school electrochemical energy storage (GS-EES).During this time you will work in an interdisciplinary team at the Battery Technology Center of the KIT. You will have access to our excellent research infrastructure and experimental facilities. Personal qualification

  • University degree (Diploma / Master) in chemistry, materials science, or similar qualifications

  • Knowledge in the field of battery storage materials, characterization thereof with suitable analytical methods

  • First battery or electrochemical experience

  • Proficiency in English language (C1) and German language (C1) is obligatory

  • Excellent ability to cooperate with internal and external project partners

Salary

Salary category 13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements.
