The automotive sector has been related to the emission of various pollutants. While the reduction of the CO2 emissions is addressed by the improvement of the engine efficiency, the conversion of CO, NOx and CH4 to less harmful and more environmentally friendly gases is handled by the catalytic converter. Even though a lot of efforts have been done in this area, the application of stricter regulations leads to the demand of a breakthrough in the design of the catalytic converter. Furthermore, the complexity of the catalytic system and its dynamic character in terms of structural modifications under various conditions necessitates the in-depth understanding of the catalytic system from the atomic level.
The focus of this research lies in the elementary-step mechanism of CO and CH4 oxidation over noble metal-based catalysts (Pt/Pd). Of particular interest is the effect of the dynamic structural changes as a function of reaction conditions and reacting atmosphere on the activity of the active site(s), i.e. the kinetics. For the goal to be achieved, microkinetic models will be developed accounting for various nanoparticle sizes and oxidation states employing data from Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The microkinetic models will be used for numerical simulations of different reactor scales (lab scale reactors to full scale catalytic converters).

You must have an excellent university degree (Diploma/Master) in chemistry or chemical engineering or a doctorate degree in those fields. A profound knowledge and experience in the field of (micro)kinetic modeling of catalytic reactions, numerical simulation and programming (e.g. Python) are required. In addition, good knowledge of the English language in word and writing are expected. Good German language skills are beneficial. Besides the professional qualification, strong commitment, team spirit, independent and self-responsible working is requested.
The remuneration occurs on the basis of the wage agreement of the civil service in TV-L E13.
