IPE 14-21 Master Thesis or Internship : Development of Advanced Data Acquisition Framework for High-throughput Streaming and Real-time Analysis of Spectroscopic Data

Organizational unit

Institute for Data Processing and Electronics (IPE)

Job description

High-speed streaming cameras are used in an increasing number of industrial and scientific applications. Real-time imaging here is of indisputable value as it opens the way for interactive monitoring, image[1]based control scenarios, and online data reduction. However, processing large streams of data is a challenging task requiring orchestration of an efficient data flow and implementation of efficient parallel algorithms suitable for modern hardware architectures. In this project, you will build an online data acquisition and image processing system for high-throughput chemical screening using advanced spectroscopic methods. Real-time data processing will enable identification of high-value targets for further analysis, thereby accelerating scientific discovery over traditional methods. Specifically, a high-speed array sensor will collect spectroscopic data at speeds exceeding 10,000 frames per second at data streams of up to 8 GB/s. The goal of the work is the acquisition of sensor data, the execution of a complex mathematical analysis, and the display of meaningful results in real-time to the user. You are expected to build a full data chain from data acquisition through data processing to data storage and integrate it with the existing control application. Particularly, you will develop a fast implementation of Goertzel algorithm using OpenMP and SIMD intrinsics. The experiment is performed within the collaboration between Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Michigan State University (MSU). The working place is at KIT.
