IPE 12-21 Master Thesis or Internship: Performance Evaluation of Distributed Time Series Databases for Industrial Control Systems
Institute for Data Processing and Electronics (IPE)
Astrophysics experiments, like particle accelerators and KATRIN, use an integration of software and hardware to control the parameters of experimentation and to read values from the sensors. Yet, the challenge in the management of such systems is storing tremendous data volumes at very high data rates with losing a single data point. Therefore, a robust and reliable distributed time-series database is required to handle high ingestion data rates.
In this proposal, we aim to evaluate and compare several time-series databases as candidates to archive the data issued by the control system of the KATRIN project. The student is expected to evaluate a few selected time-series databases in their performance and their ability to scale and tolerate hardware failures. To avoid data loss, the database should support the minimum required ingestion rate also in situations if a few nodes have failed. Therefore, it is important also to validate performance in the degraded condition and assess the impact on the current performance of various aspects resulting from node failure like the reduced amount of hardware, unbalanced configuration due to the failed node, and also additional load to the database due to re-balancing efforts.
- Very good understanding of the relational and NoSQL database technologies
- Excellent Skills in Highly Available Distributed Systems
- Good programming skills and preferably prior experience in C#, Java, and Python
- Familiar with statistical methodologies and environments like Jupyter Notebooks
