Job description

The institute of KIT’s large-scale research sector has about 90 employees. Under the program-oriented funding scheme of the Helmholtz Association, it conducts research into technical solutions to cope with the challenges of a sustainable and resilient energy system that is mainly based on renewable energy sources.

The future head of ITES will be responsible for the contributions of the Institute to the energy research programs of the Helmholtz Association. Central involvement in the strategic further development of the Institute, identification of new research fields, and successful acquisition of third-party funding is expected.

Apart from trend-setting work relating to hydrogen technologies, experience in e.g. multi-scale modeling of thermal energy systems, reactive, or multi-phase flows would be advantageous. Based on the resulting findings, solutions shall be developed for the integration of fluctuating renewable energy sources in a future sustainable and resilient energy system. Research activities of the future Head of Institute should cover both fundamental theoretical approaches and experimental work at large-scale research facilities.

The holder of the post is expected to participate in academic education of ITES, especially in the area of hydrogen-based energy systems (two hours per week per semester). The present curriculum covers thermal power plant technology, process simulation, thermal energy plants, plant safety, and sector coupling.

Personal qualification

Applicants from science or industry are expected to have outstanding scientific expertise in the area of hydrogen-based energy systems. They should have the ability to head a big institute and have excellent academic education skills. A habilitation or equivalent degree is required. Experience gained from work in industry is welcome. Employment conditions as outlined in Article 47 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg (LHG, Act of Baden-Wuerttemberg on Universities and Colleges) in conjunction with Article 20 of the KIT Act in the version valid until the entry into force of the 2nd KIT Further Development Act shall apply.
