IMT 31-20 Bachelor or Master Thesis: Re-Programmable Micro-Matter

Organizational unit

Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT)

Job description

Today, 3D printers have become indispensable in design processes and are used in all fields, from biomedical to space science. Research into 4D fabrication includes the use of stimulus-responsive or intelligent materials to enable self-assembly, self-repair and multi-functionality after the manufacturing process.

In this thesis, we aim to develop reprogrammable micro-matter that can fold and unfold from an initially flat material into different shapes similar to paper based origami. Here the micro-matter is composed of interconnected tiles by using integrated shape memory alloy (SMA) micro-actuators.

The focus of the thesis can be chosen either experimentally or theoretically:

Experimental:

  • Design and fabrication of NiTi micro-hinges
  • Experimental characterization

Theoretical:

  • FE modeling
  • Performance simulation
  • Validation

Fabrication includes laser structuring, memory shape setting, assembly technology and 3D printing. For this purpose, the Institute for Microstructure Technology (IMT) offers state-of-the-art microfabrication facilities and a 600 m² clean room. The subsequent characterization of the samples consists of mechanical tests, infrared thermography and electrical control evaluation.

The thesis can be written in both German and English.
