IKFT 03-20 Internship, Bachelor- or Masterthesis: Characterisation of sulphur compounds in HTL-Oils
Institute of Catalysis Research und Technology (IKFT)
The hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wet biomass into liquid biofuels is a promising way to reduce the negative impact of our civilization on the environment. However, the sulphur present in the biomass can pose a problem for the development of conversion technologies, as sulphur can poison downstream catalysts. In general, the presence of many heteroatoms poses a challenge for petrochemical treatment processes.
In this bachelor/master thesis, the sulphur distribution in the product phases of hydrothermal biomass liquefaction is to be investigated. Organic sulphur-containing model compounds such as cysteine and methionine serve as starting materials. Intermediate and product compounds are detected and reaction mechanisms are developed. A range of analytical instruments is available for this purpose (EA, GCMS, FTIR, NMR, etc.).
