PhD position: Diffusion- and precipitation behaviour of hydrogen in zirco-nium alloys

Job description

The safety of nuclear fuel cladding materials is investigated and evaluated at the Institute for Applied Materials ‑ Applied Material Physics of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The behaviour of hydrogen in cladding materials shall be investigated experimentally in the framework of the SPIZWURZ project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

The goal of the thesis is the determination and analysis of experimental data concerning the diffusion of hydrogen and the precipitation of hydrides in zirconium alloys depending on temperature, texture and applied stress. The work includes the preparation, controlling and post-test examinations of a large scale simulation test on a fuel rod simulator bundle and separate effect tests on laboratory scale. In addition to classic methods of material science, neutron radiography and tomography shall be applied to determine the hydrogen distributions.

The data obtained in the experiments will be used for the development and validation of numerical models describing the long-term behaviour of hydrogen in fuel claddings. These models will be implemented by the project partners into computer codes for safety assessments of nuclear fuel assemblies during long-term dry storage in CASTOR casks

Personal qualification

You have a university degree (Master / Diploma (Uni)) in materials science, physics, chemistry, or process engineering. Experience in the field of materials characterization by means of neutrons and/or X-rays and a fluent German would be an Advantage.
