INT 01-19 Master Thesis: Electrochemistry and Battery Materials
The Battery and Electrochemistry Laboratory (BELLA) is funded equally by BASF and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and is part of the BASF scientific network on electrochemistry and batteries. It is located at the campus North of KIT and is associated with the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT). Research at BELLA combines fundamental work with application-driven projects on battery materials. The equipment of the laboratory allows for a variety of synthetic work, battery assembly, and characterization of both materials and cells.
This research project aims to establish and optimise new coating strategies for cathode active materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). You will be conducting experimental work that involves synthesis (organic/inorganic chemistry), structural characterisation and electrochemical evaluation using equipment and techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, electron diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, galvanostatic charging-discharging of LIBs, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. You will also perform your own electrode preparation and battery cell assembly for electrochemical testing as well as data analysis and result interpretation for scientific publications.
- Knowledge in the field of chemistry and/or solid state physics (lab experience)
- Knowledge in the field of electrochemistry/electrochemical characterisation is desirable
- Good English language skills
- Confident use of Office and Origin Labs software for data analysis and graphing
