IMT 01-20 Bachelor or Master Thesis: Test stage development and characterization of thermo-mechanical behavior of SMA foils
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) demonstrate interesting phase change behaviour between Austenite and Martensite allowing recovery of large strains. The unique hysteretic behaviour of SMAs is exploited for passive and active damping applications. Micromachined SMA structures are particularly suitable for miniature scale damping and vibration control, e.g., to counteract hand movements in portable devices like smart phone cameras.
Depending upon the phase transformation temperature, SMAs exhibits superelastic and one-way shape memory effects. The complex non-linear thermo-mechanical behaviour of SMA structures depends on operating temperature and loading rate. Therefore, characterization of the dynamic thermo-mechanical behaviour of SMA structures is essential to develop novel SMA damper devices.
- Evaluation of the quasi-static mechanical and thermal behaviour of miniature-scale SMA structures.
- Development of a test setup for the dynamic thermo-mechanical characterization of the SMA structures at frequencies of 1-100 Hz.
- Evaluation of the thermo-mechanical behaviour at different pre-strain and loading amplitudes up to 100 Hz.
- Validation/extension of an existing SMA simulation model by analytical formulation of shift in critical stress and stress-strain plateau.
