The Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) is the Information Technology Center of KIT. In this role, the SCC operates big data infrastructures and multi-petabyte storage services for the Grid Computing Centre Karlsruhe (GridKa) and the Large Scale Data Facility (LSDF). GridKa provides storage and computing resources to the international particle physics community, in particular to experiments at CERN. The LSDF supports research projects of various data-intensive scientific disciplines like climatology and energy research in storing and accessing their data, also on the high-performance computing infrastructures of KIT. Our storage facilities are increasing in performance and size every year and will have surpassed the 100PB threshold in the late 2020s.
Your responsibilities as a System Engineer - Storage & File Services (m/f/d) will include:
- Development of new concepts for the further development of the storage systems and services in the LSDF and GridKa,
- Technical evaluation of new storage system technologies,
- Performance analyses,
- Analysis of problems and development of solutions for our scientific user communities,
- Preparation and coordination of procurements,
- Participation in national and international working groups related to GridKa and the LSDF,
- Publication of results in scientific publications and conferences,
- Strengthen our team in the operation of the storage systems and services.
All tasks require conceptual and strategic work and intensive communication with other working groups at SCC and project partners of GridKa and the LSDF, respectively.
You have a university degree (diploma (university)/ master's) in natural sciences, computer science or a similar field. You have extensive knowledge of the application, operation and administration of IT and Linux systems. You have a comprehensive knowledge and general understanding of current developments in data storage systems and cluster file systems. Experience with scientific data handling and processing would be desirable. You are proficient in programming with modern programming and scripting languages (e.g. Python, Golang, Bash or similar). Furthermore, you demonstrate a high degree of personal responsibility, personal initiative, communication skills and capacity for teamwork. You have a basic knowledge of the German language and are proficient in written and spoken English. You are motivated and have the ability to independently familiarize yourself with new complex IT projects.
Salary category 13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements.
